Wait too long, and the odds of ever recovering the debt drop significantly — studies in the credit industry consistently show that the likelihood of collecting a debt declines the longer it sits unpaid.

If you're the one receiving the call, a few practical steps go a long way:

  • Get everything in writing. Verbal promises are hard to dispute later; written records protect you.

  • Verify before you pay. Confirm the debt is legitimate and that the collector is licensed to operate in your state.

  • Know your statute of limitations. Debts become legally uncollectible through lawsuits after a certain period, which varies by state and debt type — though this doesn't erase the debt itself or stop it from affecting your credit report timeline.

  • Negotiate in writing. If you're offering a settlement, get the agreed terms documented before sending payment.
