Sewage Pump Demand Rises as Wastewater Infrastructure Moves Toward Smarter Systems

Rapid urbanization, expanding sanitation networks, aging sewer infrastructure, and increasing investment in wastewater treatment are strengthening the role of sewage pumps in municipal and industrial water-management systems. As cities expand and wastewater volumes increase, reliable pumping equipment is required to move sewage through collection networks, treatment facilities, drainage systems, and discharge points.

According to MarkNtel Advisors, the global sewage pump sector is estimated at USD 14.5 billion in 2026 and is projected to reach USD 23 billion by 2032, expanding at a CAGR of 8.0% during 2026–2032. The assessment identifies government investment in wastewater infrastructure and the adoption of smart, IoT-enabled pumping systems as important factors influencing sector development.

Government Investment Strengthens Wastewater Infrastructure

Public investment remains a major factor shaping demand for sewage pumping equipment. Municipal sewer networks, wastewater treatment plants, drainage systems, and pumping stations require dependable equipment capable of handling continuous flows and varying loads.

Large infrastructure projects illustrate the scale of investment taking place across different regions. The study highlights the Kurdistan Regional Government’s second phase of the Erbil wastewater treatment project, which includes sewer networks and pumping stations designed to treat 840,000 cubic meters of wastewater per day.

International financing is also supporting sanitation infrastructure. The International Finance Corporation has identified wastewater and sanitation infrastructure as an important area for investment, particularly where urban development is increasing pressure on existing systems.

Municipal Applications Account for the Largest Share

Municipal applications represented approximately 65% of the sector in 2026, making them the leading application segment. Municipal sewage systems handle wastewater generated by residential, commercial, and industrial users, creating demand for high-capacity pumping equipment.

Population growth and urban expansion are increasing the pressure on existing sewer networks in many cities. Aging infrastructure can also require replacement or modernization, particularly where older systems experience capacity constraints, leakage, blockages, or operational inefficiencies.

Municipal authorities are therefore increasingly considering pumping equipment as part of broader wastewater-infrastructure upgrades rather than as standalone equipment purchases.

Submersible Pumps Maintain a Leading Position

Submersible sewage pumps accounted for approximately 42% of the sector in 2026. Their ability to operate directly within wastewater environments makes them suitable for applications involving sewage, sludge, contaminated fluids, and solids.

These pumps generally feature sealed motor systems and compact configurations, allowing them to operate in environments where conventional surface-mounted equipment may require additional infrastructure. Their suitability for underground drainage networks, pumping stations, and flood-prone areas contributes to their widespread use.

Advances in corrosion-resistant materials, motor efficiency, and pump design are also supporting improvements in operational performance and lifecycle management.

Smart Pumping Brings Digital Monitoring to Wastewater Systems

Digitalization is changing how wastewater utilities monitor and maintain pumping infrastructure. IoT-enabled pumps can use sensors and connected platforms to track operating conditions, detect anomalies, monitor energy consumption, and support predictive maintenance.

The study identifies smart pumping as a major trend, noting that utilities are increasingly using sensors, cloud-based systems, and AI-enabled analytics to improve pump performance. These technologies can help operators identify potential failures before they result in significant downtime.

In 2025, Grundfos introduced Grundfos Connect Sewer Insights, a digital solution using radar sensors, machine learning, and predictive analytics to support sewage-network management and help prevent overflows. Such developments illustrate the movement from conventional equipment toward connected wastewater infrastructure.

Energy Efficiency Becomes More Important

Energy consumption is an important consideration for sewage-pumping operations because municipal systems may run continuously or handle highly variable flows. Improving motor efficiency, pump hydraulics, controls, and operating schedules can therefore influence overall lifecycle costs.

Variable-speed systems and automated controls can adjust pumping activity according to changing wastewater volumes. Smart monitoring can further identify inefficient operating conditions and help utilities optimize pump performance.

The shift toward energy-efficient equipment also aligns with broader efforts to reduce operating costs and environmental impacts associated with wastewater treatment and transportation.

Climate Risks Increase Demand for Reliable Pumping

Climate-related flooding and extreme rainfall events can place additional pressure on drainage and sewage networks. Pumping stations may need to manage sudden increases in wastewater and stormwater volumes while maintaining reliable operation during difficult conditions.

Municipalities are consequently considering resilience when upgrading drainage and wastewater systems. Equipment selection increasingly involves factors such as capacity, redundancy, corrosion resistance, automated controls, and remote monitoring.

Climate-resilient infrastructure can also reduce the risk of sewage overflows and service interruptions in densely populated urban areas.

Asia-Pacific Leads Regional Demand

Asia-Pacific accounted for approximately 35% of the sector in 2026, making it the largest regional market. Rapid urbanization, population density, expanding sanitation coverage, and government investment in wastewater infrastructure are supporting demand across countries including China, India, and Southeast Asian economies.

The region is also experiencing industrial expansion and the development of smart-city infrastructure, both of which can increase wastewater-treatment requirements. Local manufacturing capabilities and cost-competitive production further support the availability of pumping equipment.

Large municipal projects across the region are creating requirements for new sewer networks, decentralized treatment facilities, pumping stations, and modernization of existing infrastructure.

High Installation Costs Remain a Constraint

Despite rising infrastructure requirements, high initial installation costs can limit sewage-pump adoption, particularly among smaller municipalities and facilities with constrained budgets. Complete wastewater projects may require pumps alongside civil works, pipelines, electrical systems, control equipment, and automation infrastructure.

The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency’s wastewater infrastructure assessment highlights the substantial investment required to maintain and upgrade sewer collection systems and pumping infrastructure in the United States.

These capital requirements can delay projects or encourage phased infrastructure development. Lifecycle costs, maintenance requirements, energy consumption, and equipment reliability therefore remain important considerations when evaluating pumping systems.

Toward More Intelligent Wastewater Infrastructure

The global sewage pump sector is increasingly connected with broader developments in urban sanitation, wastewater treatment, climate resilience, and digital infrastructure. Municipal applications remain the primary source of demand, while submersible pumps continue to hold a leading position because of their suitability for challenging wastewater environments.

The integration of IoT monitoring, predictive maintenance, efficient motors, and automated controls is gradually changing pump operations. As governments expand wastewater infrastructure and utilities seek greater reliability and efficiency, sewage pumps are becoming an increasingly integrated component of smarter and more resilient water-management systems.
